My name is Kim Brittingham and I'm an author, essayist and video host.
Read My Hips is about my experience as an American woman and how a cultural obsession with thinness from the 1970s to the present helped shape me, mind and body. Read My Hips isn’t a self-help book, it isn't how-to; it’s storytelling. They're my stories -- stories about an intense and enduring desire to be beautiful that once burned inside my doughy adolescent middle like a Santeria bodega candle.
My first book, a memoir titled READ MY HIPS: How I Learned to Love My Body, Ditch Dieting and Live Large, is forthcoming in spring 2011 from Random House.

Read My Hips is also a love letter to puckery thighs, flabby arms, swollen bellies and round womanly hips. It's an intimate peek inside my evolving process from body hatred to radical self-acceptance. It reveals how I learned to love my body the most – ironically, perhaps -- at my heaviest.

Read "Fat is Contagious", the essay based on my social experiment employing a phony book cover with the same title.
Yes, it's true. I used to play hooky from high school by hiring a limousine driver to take me to New York City. Read about it!
